Magazine Layout + Inspiration

The Purple Journal is a mag all about stories from people's travels.
The layout's pretty simple and it's printed on a lovely paper.
(I'll bring it in)

This is Acne Paper, it's F off huge and is printed on paper similar to newspaper..
It was really hard to get a good picture but you get the general idea..

This is Peppermint. Apparently it's the first eco friendly fashion mag or whatever.. Still looks pretty cool. I like the way the photos are layed out with the round corners and colour filters..

I'm all for full page photo spreads!

Exciting stuff..

So I went down to Manly on Monday to get inspired, take some photos and get a hot chocolate from Max Brenner. Market Place looks bad on a good day, so you can imagine what it looks like when it's raining on bin day. So there I stood, in the middle of Market Place, complete with rubbish bins, dodgy peeps that hang in lanes and the ugliest mural in the world. I decided to make the most of it and take photos of things that need improvement or are a hazard.

They ran out of posts to put things on:

I thought this thing was pretty cool.
Don't know what it is but it gave me an idea for a lettermark..

My attempts at Lettermarkmaking..

Colours and textures taken from Market Place, signs and bins.

One thing that definitely needs improving is the signage..

Market Lane Mural

"Murals are a very economical way of bringing some vibrancy to an otherwise neglected area that can do with a splash of colour"..

Ruth Downes was commissioned to create a mural for Market Lane in 2005.
The lane is subject to frequent graffiti attacks and needed something to cover the dark and gloomy walls. The mural was made up of bright colours and old news headlines taken from the Manly Daily between 1920's and 2005. Some headlines include; "Ferry Runs Aground" - 1955, "First Car Across Spit Bridge" - 1924, "Plaster Gnomes Kidnapped" - 1984. It's a shame they didn't commission a designer to help with the typography..
