Thursday w8 meeting

So we looked at what to do with Market Place, what to change etc. This is a rough sketch of ideas (the areal view one), words marked in pink is what we have to look up (materials, research etc) The other sketch is an example of what an arch for the entrance in to market place would look like (a very bad one but we get the idea).

When it comes to the letter mark Matt turned us into another direction to bring the library side of things more in to the picture. Script fonts. We can have some type of pictogram but the letters MP have to stand out and be the main thing that catches the attention. (Dan will keep on posting ideas make sure to put your opinion in!)

Thanks everyone for great work so far! Lets get ahead with this assignment both to impress Matt and Peter and for our own sake. :)

Market Place investigation

Hii,
(--- means it's a new thought:)

--- Visited the police station with Brittany and spoke to a police man who didn't know much but said he had only ever been called to market place twice in the last few years but he said we needed to talk to another officer who will be back in the office after ester. So we'll follow that up!

--- At Manly library I was looking at articles about the ingraved bricks we'd seen in the middle of Market Place.

"Buy-a-brick foundation for the new manly liberary and you have the change to put your make in a paving stone for posterity."
"You become a part of the local history and library users will read your name over and over."
Manly library Trust - Buy-a-Brick - Local version of the Hollywood stars' walk of fame.
1000 Bricks available - private donors pay $100 - corporate donors pay $500.
Money raised would help the new library with extra state of the art technology.
Library opened in June 1995.
(Manly Daily, 7 Jan 95, "For $100 you are history, get walked on")

Names of children, family names, pets and friends.
A contribution to the local community.
"There is even a brick to honor a man who was a local before the arrival of the first fleet, his name was Arabanoo. He was an aboriginal man kidnapped by Governor Arthur Phillip in Dec 1788, in a vain bid to force aboriginies to communicate with him." Arabanoo died in 1789 from snallpox.
(Manly Daily, 14 April 1999, "Names will be etched forever in Manly's heart")

Well known figures from recent times named on bricks,
- Henry Gilbert Smith, founder of Manly.
- Colonel Thomas Rowe, the first mayor of Manly.
- Noel Ryan, represented Aus in 1932 Olympics & 1934 Empire Games. He was a member of Manly Swimming & Lifesaving.

According to a Town Planner book "Manly planning scheme review, stage 1" 28 Jan 1981, Manly & Tourism was hand in hand even then. They were trying to figure out if tourism should be encourraged, if so, the type of tourist activities prefered by the local recidents etc.
The Manly ferries was a big part in why tourism to Manly became so prodomonent.

--- I also had a quick chat with Peter today and he mentioned that it would be iteresting if we find things out about the history and then try to follow it up, can we find any of the people involved in planning / building the area (who is still alive) and can remember what it was like etc. He ALSO said that there has been a group who have done the same area before...... and that some of the info they found out about Manly's history in generall was very interesting.

--- So dear group.
I think our next step is to keep on researching in any ways and forms, set a meeting time for next week when we can start talking about ideas on what to do with Market Place. Suggestions of time to meet?
Chat to police and council.
Interview people.
Photograph the area daytime/nighttime/holidays.

oh and question, are we allowed to tare the stupid clock tower stair case down?? Hate it!

See you tomorrow, please add research before class tomorrow too so we can work and chat about our findings in class :) x

Ok so because of the rain we'll try and get the Internet research done. I tried last night and its hard to find a starting point so maybe post as you go then its easier to get points off one another as well.

Also the councils planning to re design the space I don't know if someone mentioned it already but heres the link and it has a few peoples comments on it including the old architect.

http://manly-daily.whereilive.com.au/news/story/manly-triangle-revamp-plan/

I think the new plan looks just as bad..

So if we divide it up into

- History of Manly
- History of the Library/Space
- Manly/Space today
- Good examples of spaces like ours

- and everyone collect design influences and what can be done with the space?

Research one each before next week,
just post which one your doing so we don't double up

I'm happy to continue with History of the space, or if anyone can think of a better topic just add it.

See you soon!
Jade

Wednesday 1/4
